BHUBANESWAR: Odisha has collected an estimated Rs 1,152 crore in state GST (SGST) in February, a nearly 47% growth compared to the Rs 781 crore collected during the same period last year.

According to figures released by the state GST commissioner’s office, the overall collection including central GST (CGST), SGST, integrated GST (IGST) and cess during February is estimated at Rs 4,101 crore compared to Rs 3,340 crore collected during the corresponding period last year, registering a growth of 23%. Growth in GST is mostly driven by mining and manufacturing sectors. The successful auction of iron ore mines last year by the state government is contributing significantly to increase in tax revenue this year, said a statement issued by the GST commissioner’s office.

Amongst the top 100 taxpayers, while mining sector witnessed a growth of 84%, the manufacturing sector recorded 101% growth during this year. Among others, the service sector, trading sector and works contract sector have recorded a decent growth of 61.37%, 69.64% and 38.83% respectively in the current fiscal over the corresponding period last year, the statement said.

The state’s total VAT collection (from petroleum products and liquor) during February is estimated at Rs 836 crore compared to Rs 833 crore during the same period last year. Out of this, Rs 641 crore has been collected from the petroleum products while Rs 195 crore has been collected from liquor during last month.

Growth of GST during the current financial year is a result of better non-filer management and regular return scrutiny by various circles combined with enforcement activities which have resulted in better compliance by taxpayers, said a senior official.

During the current financial year, as many as 43,542 new taxpayers have been brought under the GST fold.
